The Light Behind The Sun
March 9 – April 13

Press Release

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present The Light Behind the Sun, an exhibition of paintings by Yuh-Shioh. Inspired by personal visions and concepts from ancient civilizations,  Yuh-Shioh creates ethereal compositions that are both deliberate and impulsive.

Her interest in Shamanism and the spiritual realm leads Yuh-Shioh to paint atmospheric landscapes that are summoned from her experiences with nature. She uses large Sumi and Hake brushes to apply diluted acrylic paint to stretched raw canvas. Her confident shapes are painted with intention, while watery edges bleed spontaneously into the natural raw canvas surface.

Yuh-Shioh earned a BA in painting at Harvard University and an MFA in painting from Hunter College in New York City. She also attended Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in Maine. In 2013 she was the Artist-in-Residence at the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. Yuh-Shioh currently lives and works in Mount Shasta, California.
