Follow the Line

January 12–March 2, 2018

Gallery Reception
Saturday, January 27, 6–8 pm

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Follow the Line, works by Albuquerque based artist Emi Ozawa. Ozawa created this body of work at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program over the past year. Several of her pieces are based on Amidakuji, a Japanese game of chance learned by every school-aged child in Japan. If you follow the line, you find the winner.

While working in the large studio in Roswell, Ozawa was able to increase the scale of her work. Her painted wood wall sculptures explore color, line, volume, geometry, and shadow. The playful yet purposeful compositions change when the viewer moves around the work as each vantage point offers a unique perspective. Exquisitely crafted and finished, the sculptures are made of either mahogany or poplar and painted with acrylic.

The gallery will be showing works on paper by Emi Ozawa at Art on Paper in New York from March 8 - 11, 2018. Central to Ozawa’s studio practice is an elaborate model-making process in which she refines her ideas. These models show how she can generate form and structure with paper to subsequently be constructed in wood.

Originally from Tokyo, Ozawa currently lives and works in Albuquerque. She studied woodworking at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and later earned an MFA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Ozawa has exhibited work throughout the United States as well as in the UK and Japan
